A Christmas light extravaganza | Wednesday 4th to Sunday 29th December

 Welcome to Christmas in Chelsea! The Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded in 1682 by King Charles II.

The Chelsea Pensioners are retired soldiers of the British Army. They have worn their iconic red coats since the hospital’s early days.

The event is set in the historic Ranelagh Gardens, once one of London's most famous pleasure gardens.

Harry the Bear, the Hospital’s official mascot, was named in honour of the Chelsea Pensioners' service to the nation.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea hosts an annual Festival of Lessons & Carols - a cherished Christmas tradition.

Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral, designed the building.

Women have been able to become Chelsea Pensioners since 2009, a new tradition in the hospital's long history.

Our Christmas market chalets are filled with handpicked gifts and artisan crafts - perfect for that special holiday gift.

The hospital grounds contain trees planted by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to commemorate their 
1947 wedding.

One of Ranelagh Gardens’ striking features was its enormous ornate, domed Rotunda, that hosted concerts and grand events.

The young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played at Ranelagh Gardens during his visit to London in 1764.

One of the oldest recorded Chelsea Pensioners, Henry Allingham, lived to the age of 104 and was a veteran of both World Wars.

You might see the Chelsea Pensioners at their home at the Royal Hospital Chelsea when you visit this Christmas - either in the gift shop or at their dedicated festive chalet. Say hello if you see them!

Ranelagh Gardens forms part of the famous Chelsea Flower Show, hosted by the Royal Hospital Chelsea since 1913.

The statue of King Charles II at the Hospital entrance is a reminder of the site's royal history.

At Christmas in Chelsea, you'll find gourmet festive food and drink to enjoy on the Sir Christopher Wren designed Top Lawn.

King's Road was originally a private road built in 1694 for King Charles II to travel between his palaces in St. James's and Hampton Court.

There will be choirs and other surprise performers at Christmas in Chelsea. They’ve been practising for you and would love you to join in!

The Hospital’s colonnades were designed to shield soldiers from the elements, now adding historic charm to your festive visit.

Every Chelsea Pensioner wears their medals with pride - each one tells a story of service and courage.

Take a stroll over Chelsea Bridge on the way to the event. The first bridge 
in Britain to be lit by electric lights.

Our wreath making workshops are inspired by the adorning the doors of Chelsea for the festive season.
